Asian Grilled Chicken ~ Marinated chicken in oyster sauce then grilled. Paired deliciously with jasmine rise and pickled veggies. My high school boyfriend is from Cambodia.  His mom and stepdad taught me how to make a few dishes in exchange for making them a traditional American Thanksgiving one year.  So at 16 years old, I made my first Thanksgiving dinner, turkey and all the trimmings.

I do remember having to call home and talk to my stepdad several times throughout the process.  One of the first things they shared with me is their version of bbq chicken.  It’s crazy how simple it is.
I, for once, was not going to cook for an army.  I was going to just cook for two adults and one child.  This was actually accomplished and was by far one of the best dinners I have made in quite some time.
Asian Grilled Chicken was simple yet packed with flavor.  Each component was fantastic on their own, but honestly it was combination of the chicken, the sweet chili cucumbers and onions, and the jasmine rice.
The rice was actually important here.  The dish would not have been as fantastic without jasmine rice. Now my high school boyfriend’s family used chicken drummers and wings, but I only had chicken tenders on hand.  They worked perfectly.  I hope you all enjoy this Asian Grilled Chickenas much as I did.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb . chicken tenders
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 tbsp . oyster sauce
  • Black pepper; to taste
  • 1 tbsp . cilantro; chopped (optional)
  • 2 cups cooked jasmine rice
  • Sweet Chili Cucumbers & Onions

Instructions

  1. Place the chicken tenders in a zipseal bag and add the garlic, oyster sauce, and black pepper.
  2. Shake well, taking care that the chicken is fully coated in the sauce.
  3. Allow the chicken to marinate at least 30 minutes.
  4. Prepare your charcoal grill or preheat your gas grill.
  5. Once the grill is ready, remove the chicken from the marinade and place it on the grill.
  6. Grill for approximately 3 to 5 minutes on each side, but this will vary based on the thickness of your chicken tenders and your grill.
  7. It’s best to use a thermometer and make sure your chicken registers 165°.
  8. Serve with jasmine rice and the sweet chili cucumber and onion salad.
  9. Garnishing with the optional cilantro.

I’ve never had oyster sauce and can’t imagine finding it where I live. Does it taste anything like fish sauce? Or is there something else that could replace it? Looks delish!

Oyster sauce used to be an obscure ingredient to find in US markets as well. One had to go to an Asian grocery store. Now, it is sold in every market. It is with the soy sauces and teriyaki sauces. I will need to do some research on how to replace it. It is not like fish sauce at all. It is thick, like a barbecue sauce. I will research and get back with you.

Thank’s Karen, it was a very interesting time. I had a lot of false confidence back then (arrogant teen), thinking I knew how to do things…like just getting in a car and driving with no lessons….
