French Toast ~ Classic breakfast of seasoned egg battered bread and griddle-cooked, then topped with a delicious Strawberry Coulis ~ The Complete Savorist
I think French toast is one of the first things I ever learned to make from scratch.  It was during one of those ‘breakfast for dinner’ nights.  I was probably 11 years old, maybe 12.I don’t think I’ve strayed too far from my first teaching with this basic recipe.  This simple recipe is the one that provides me with that soul-nourishing comfort of childhood.  I believe I may have combined my stepdad’s recipes with my paternal grandmother’s recipe though.  I can’t rightly remember all these years later.
While the dipping liquid is important when making French toast, to me the most crucial item is the bread.  Cheap, fluff bread will disappoint; it will tear and just leave you wanting.  Conversely, I am not a huge fan of the super-healthy, 101-grain, nut, & seed type bread either for making this dish.  Personally, I like a hearty white bread.  It could be a childhood, Wonder Bread type thing (although this is not a recommended bread.) I love going to the local bakery and purchasing a country-style white loaf for my French toast.  It’s very hearty and reminiscent of the texture of my childhood. My daughter is 4 years old and this might be the second or third time I have ever made her this dish.  It’s not really on the approved eating list anymore, but it was one I saved up the calories for.  And it was worth every calorie. French Toast ~ Classic breakfast of seasoned egg battered bread and griddle-cooked, then topped with a delicious Strawberry Coulis ~ The Complete Savorist

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf hearty white bread
  • 4 eggs; beaten
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • Butter/oil/cooking spray
  • Strawberry coulis

Instructions

  1. Heat a griddle to medium a medium heat. Once heated, apply a bit of butter, oil, or cooking spray.
  2. While the griddle is heating up, beat the eggs and milk together. Add the vanilla, nutmeg, sugar, and salt. Whisk all the ingredients together.
  3. Dip a slice of bread in the egg mixture, allowing the bread to thoroughly soak up the liquid. Flip and repeat.
  4. Place the bread on the heated and greased griddle.
  5. Leave it for about three minutes or until cooked on that side.
  6. Flip and allow them to finish cooking, about two minutes.
  7. Time is based on my griddle heat and temperature.
  8. Adjust for your own appliance, as each is different.
  9. Plate the French toast and top as desired.
  10. Butter, strawberry coulis, and powdered sugar is sure delicious!
