I felt shamed by Carrie Underwood long ago when the song about the cheating boyfriend came out. The lines are “Right now, he’s probably buying/Her some fruity little drink/’Cause she can’t shoot whiskey.” I’m not the cheating type at all-excessively loyal if you will, but I am so the fruity little drink type.

I made whiskey’s acquaintance several years ago at my birthday party. Well, technically it was a bit before then, I had done a shot of regular whiskey and thought I was going to die…literally. Then I did a shot of honey whiskey later that same evening and it was much smoother, calmer.

Back to the birthday party, it was a joint party with Darla and our friend Dan-our birthdays are all within a 13-day period. The honey whiskey was brought out and we each did a shot. No big deal. Now, I should tell you at this point, my daughter was safely away for the night with her father. I wasn’t going to be driving. I had taken every safety and responsible precaution one should take when knowingly drinking.

After that shot, the shots continued. I am a light-weight. Majorly. Cheap date as some may say. I feel my liquor fairly quickly, which normally is nice,  It keeps my expenses down, the calories at a minimum, and don’t drink to excess. But not this night. But that was the plan–just not with whiskey.

To make a long and quite possibly blurry story short, I broke up with whiskey that night, err, the next day. Other than cooking with it, I didn’t touch the stuff for years. Fast forward to early 2015. My friend Matthew is a frequent visitor and a whiskey drinker. His cocktail of choice is a simple one of whiskey and water. I took a sip of it one of the first times he made it and didn’t care for it. My aversion to whiskey was still firm. Whiskey Sour ~ The classic cocktail made easily at home sans the egg, perfect for any party or simply for unwinding after a long day ~ The Complete Savorist Then last December, he and I went to a small venue concert in Salt Lake City. He ran to the bar to get us cocktails. He came back with a gin cocktail for me (another spirit I once loathed, but now love) and a whiskey sour for himself. We each sipped each other’s cocktail and surprisingly I found myself loving his. After I finished my gin cocktail, I switched to whiskey sours for the rest of the night. In fact, since then, whenever I am out and order a cocktail (versus wine), I almost always order a whiskey sour.

Now I make them at home with my own sour mix (look for that recipe soon). I can even handle his whiskey and water cocktails. My palate grew up and I no longer feel shamed when I hear Carrie Underwood sing those lines.

Whiskey sours can be made using an egg white. I don’t normally make it this way at home, but I do order it that way at my favorite bar in Salt Lake City every time. Both are delicious. My recipe below is without an egg, but don’t worry, I’ll get you a recipe with an egg soon.

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup whiskey
  • 2/3 cup sour mix
  • Ice

Instructions

  1. Add a few ice cubes to each lowball glass.
  2. Either in a cocktail shaker, combine the whiskey and sour mix and pour into each glass or pour 1/3 cup whiskey into each glass, then 1/3 cup sour mix and stir.
  3. Serve and enjoy responsibly.

Recipe Notes

*Recipe proportions are for using lowball glasses.
*I prefer to use bourbon, however, rye whiskey is perfectly delicious too.
*It is not recommend to use cheap whiskey in this drink, as they are often cut with water before bottling.

This drink is retro-cool! Actually I don’t know if whisky sours are retro, but I’m thinking that they might be. Lovely looking, full to the brim, cocktail!
